Mendip Mallards

About Us

The Mendip Mallards was formed over 25 years ago as a means for people of varying ages and degrees of physical and mental ability to swim within a protected atmosphere. Since then, the group has thrived, meeting every Sunday at Strode Pool, Street, where the pool is closed to the general public between 12.30 and 1.30. Cups of tea, a good chat and a raffle greet any members who wish to socialise afterwards before wending their way home to a well deserved Sunday lunch.

The group has a strong competitive edge, competing against other clubs in the south west annually at swimming galas arranged at Yeovil, Plymouth, Keynsham and of course at Strode. These events are supported very enthusiastically, and culminate in the host team feeding well over 100 competitors with a celebratory tea.
The British Long Distance Swimming Association (BLDSA) also offers members a chance to show their skills and The Mallards regularly collect several gold medals in their postal contest.
The club welcomes anyone who feels that exercise will improve their fitness levels. An ability to swim is not a condition of joining The Mallards.

Helpers in the pool are pleased to give one to one assistance where necessary, although carers are encouraged to accompany seriously disabled members. A desire to enjoy the water is all that is required!

Membership is open to all ages and all levels of ability. Family groups and carers are welcome to join us.

During the year the members involve themselves with various activities, one of the highlights being the Garden Party, where members are treated to a barbeque kindly prepared by members of Walton church. Naturally, members also enjoy a Christmas lunch, which is always very well subscribed. The meal is excellent and the afternoon sees Father Christmas arrive with his sack of goodies for children both large and small, and is followed by a lusty sing song of carols.

The Mallards are always looking to provide an opportunity for people to swim with them. New members will be welcome, as will anyone who wishes to become a helper.
